About Salsa

Salsa is a smouldering partner dance and music style originating in Cuba. It is a culmination of many latin and afro-carribean dances and owes its early evolution to the fusion of Danzon (England/French Country Dance), African Rumba (Guaguanco, Yambu), Afro-Cuban beats and Cuban Son among others. It was later introduced to New York through musicians who took their music on their travels, and it was here where Salsa got its name which was used to describe most forms of latin dance including Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Mambo, Danzon, Son etc.

Due to the many influences over the years, the dance has a lot of variations and types of movement ranging from Cuban Salsa which is more circular, to Crossbody style which can be further categorised as On1 or Mambo (On2). Crossbody Salsa can be danced with a partner, as a solo piece, or as a group in formation. Cuban Salsa can also be danced with a partner, as a solo or in a group formation known as Rueda (Spanish for 'Wheel'), where a group of partners perform specific moves on the command of a 'caller'.

Salsa Music is governed by an instrument and sound known as the clave (key) also referred to as the 'heartbeat' of salsa. It is generally danced in a pattern of 6 steps over eight musical counts and as you develop and take more control of your salsa you will be able to use additional steps within the eight counts to express yourself musically as guided by the music..
